It is a type of farming that rears fish for sale.
Fish is an important component of human diet. In Selangor, in a fish farm called PKPS Farm Mart, tilapia is reared and 60,000 kg of it are sold per week and it is the biggest producer in Selangor. The farm produces tilapia only. There are 250,000 fishes in one pond and the average size of each tilapia is around 700g, each fish consumes 200g of fish food daily.
In PKPS Farm Mart, the tilapia is grown to have more meat as the ponds have simulated currents created by paddle-wheels. With the currents, the fishes become stronger as they are forced to swim against the current constantly, thus, giving a firmer texture of the meat.
The whole process of rearing tilapias is as follows:
- 1 month for the baby fish (fry) in the nursery
- After 2 months in the growing pond, the fishes are put in the final stage ponds
- Feeding is done via the auto feeder, which cut down the need for more manpower
